A masterpiece of Art Deco design, Les Gazelles au Bois is an iconic pattern conceived in 1927 by Pierre Pozier, a nephew of our founder, Frederic Schumacher, and an artist in his own right. Initially based in Paris, Pozier represented the company at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels?the groundbreaking exhibition that gives the Art Deco movement its name. Through his efforts, Schumacher became one of the first companies in America to stock Art Deco textiles. Les Gazelles au Bois stunningly reflects the mood of that era, with a gleaming pattern of twirling foliage and a leaping gazelle rendered in precious metal tones against a backdrop of ivory or ebony. This reproduction, faithful to the scale of the original, required weaving on rare, narrow-width looms. It was a smash success?decorating the ballroom for the 1931 opening of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel?and an enduring favorite ever since.
